Observation Narrative
Plot is situated in a typical, saturated microhabitat of an extensive (105-acre) saturated flatwoods on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Water pools during the winter in a broad, slight depression here. The forest is co-dominated by Quercus michauxii, Q. pagoda, Q. phellos, and Quercus alba. Ilex opaca and sapling Acer rubrum dominate the shrub layer, while grasses and sedges dominate the open herb layer.
